The Glimpses from the Souk develops.

Embedding the collage; As this develops I find I am thinking of memory's, how they merge. The images I thought I was looking for; the tiles, even the carpets, are becoming less important and its the journey through the space that interests me. The dark and light, (as ever) the object are secondary.
The Market in Essoera was different from the one in Rabat. In Essoera there were defined halls fro food, spices, jewellery, whereas Rabat the food vendors were on the street mixed in among the dry goods. the beads and shoes hung in racemes from the doorways. I am returning to Rabat in December, I'll take new photos with this project in mind.

Glimpses from the souk

Returning from Morocco last May I wanted to make some work but was overwhelmed with material.
From time to time I can't work. Myriad of reasons. Too much stuff in the head, too much work in the studio... don't want to make more to add to this, plus all the other paintings and art around, why create even more!!!!
Then I couldn't get my show about Leo off the ground. So I felt ... whats the point, etc etc....

Anyway this passes, it always does, and images of my trips to Essaouira and Rabat in Morocco kept arriving in my mind. They processed, composted slowly in the brain, tap tap tapping until I sat at the computer and sorted and cropped and sorted some more.

I printed some out.
I want to make a whole that feels like snippets and glimpses as I explore the alleys and markets of the souk...

Markets have been part of my life, my family always worked on the markets selling clothes, some of my earliest memory s are of rails of garments and vans and calls. I lived in a flat on Walthamstow market for ten years, the rattle of the stalls being set out at 5 in the morning, mixed with my dreams.
So the souk is not so 'other', for me it's a return.

I plan to try to be loose, slightly random, to add old fabric and tissue paper in with my paint.

Here are the starting points. Must try not to get too tight or accurate... keep it as glimpses.

Grrrr

Its so hard to get exposure for an idea that hasn't come from the organization... everyone has their own agenda of course, I understand that... But if we painters can only show through commercial galleries.... where is the place to show our exploration of complex, issue based concepts.....! (sorry for little rant!) (and a huge thank you Robin Peters for the offer of his gallery in 2019 ...which we will certainly do. ) I'm hoping for a mini tour... still working on it.

All day Life Drawing and Painting Workshop Weekend Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September

Hi everyone,
Here's a date for your diary.
I know its ages away but at the beginning of September, Blue and I are going to run an
All day Life Drawing and Painting Workshop Weekend
to get you back into the swing of it.
On
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September 10  am - 4 pm.
Over this two day workshop, we will be looking in depth at the rhythms and flows of the human form, exploring a variety of techniques, mark making and poses in the mornings, and a long pose in the afternoon. The long pose will be repeated on the second day so you can really work on it.

I will provide paper, charcoal and basic paint, so you can explore and experiment, but you may want to bring your own pastels, acrylics or oil paint, (Sansodor or equivalent, as a medium) and brushes, pallets, canvas etc. to really take advantage of the two-day long pose.

There will also be tea, coffee and biscuits, (of the nicest kind of course) but please bring a packed lunch.

You can book directly with eventbrite   Click here to go to the page!

Places will be limited to 10 max....
Please spread the word
